Since No One
Asked Me

Welcome to Whatever This Is

Hi. Dan here.

This is my new blog site. I built it myself. I don't mean that I used some website generator and pieced it together out of pre-built components. No, I learned basic HMTL and CSS coding (like, just barely) and made this from scratch in about a week. Considering that the extent of my HTML knowledge prior to that was making a Myspace page have a custom background and play Panic! at the Disco about twenty years ago, I'm fairly proud of myself for figuring it all out.

"But, like... why?"

It's pretty simple; I enjoy writing, I'd like to get better at it, and I thought it'd be cool to make a website to house it all instead of just sticking it on WordPress. You may have seen me mention that I recently wrote a couple of articles for a local paper, which was something that I enjoyed doing. But I don't want to have to rely on them assigning me articles because A) it's inconsistent, B) I would almost exclusively be writing what they want me to write about (and rightfully so), and C) frankly my most recent experience with them was less than pleasant. But, with this space, I can write what I want when I want, and no one's going to come in and change how I phrase things and limit the word count to fit between a bunch of advertisements.

"So... what are you gonna write about?"

Honestly, the answer is that it's probably going to be pretty all-over-the-place, at least in the beginning. I've thought about picking a niche just to have a "lane", something like all things related to Toledo performing arts, restaurants, local events, etc., but I know that I'd like to write about things outside of that. I see myself writing about personal stuff, sharing my thoughts on the never-ending shit-show that is the current administration in D.C., or just writing about silly shit that brings me joy. My hope is that I’ll figure that out as I go.

I've been a longtime fan of the phrase "since no one asked me", and that seemed like a fitting title for a page where I give my two cents on a wide range of subjects without ever being prompted to do so.

Welp, that about sums it up. I hope like hell that someone, anyone, enjoys reading what I have to say. I realize my reach will be much lower in comparison to writing for the paper, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. More than anything, I want to become a better writer and to talk about the things that interest me. If you choose to tune in from time to time, I greatly appreciate you.
